Wilson Eyes Olympic Gold
Peter Wilson has set his sights on Olympic gold after shining in the Maribor World Cup.
At just 24-years-old, the British Shooting Double Trap star shot his way to his first international gold last week by seeing off world-class competition in Slovenia.
And, with just over a year to go until London 2012 kicks-off, Wilson reckons the win will stand him in good stead to secure Team GB an Olympic gold medal.
He said: “I am 100 per cent aiming for gold in London 2012 and am very confident.
“I don’t think we’ve ever had a better chance. The standard of British Shooting is so high now and, particularly with Shotgun, I don’t think any of us have ever had a better chance of winning.”
The World Cup win in Maribor has taken Wilson’s confidence to another level.
He explained how the feeling of having that prestigious medal placed around his neck is one he wants to experience many more times in the future.
The Dorchester born athlete continued: “It was amazing.
“It was a feeling on a completely different level to when I got silver earlier this year.
“The reception you get from silver great, but when you win gold it’s simply phenomenal. My feet are only just starting to touch the ground now."
With the European Championships fast approaching, Wilson is straight back into his six-day training schedule this week, but he did have time to reflect on how vital the British Shooting World Class Program, which is lottery funded through UK Sport, has been to him this year.
He explained: ”The scheme has been vital to my progress and the result has been a culmination of all my hard work over the past year.
“I can’t ever underestimate the help that they’ve giving me. Without them I wouldn’t even be pulling the trigger, never mind celebrating World Cup gold medals.“
