UK Sport Funding Announcement Print E-mail

The announcement by UK Sport that British Shooting will receive £1,225,350 for the 2009-13 Olympic cycle is both disappointing and disproportionate compared to others sports.  It is undoubtedly a hurdle that Shooting will have to overcome.  It is a fifth of the budget we have received for the Beijing Olympic cycle, so we will have to reduce the intensity and scope of our training and competitive programme in the run up to London 2012.  This streamlining of costs will unavoidably impact the athletes, coaches and support staff.

Nevertheless the sport will look to the future with a new determination and British Shooting will continue to nurture the considerable talent available. We are already investigating other funding streams in order to effectively support athletes and win medals at London 2012 and beyond.

In the first overseas match of 2009, Georgina Geikie won the Gold medal in the last match of the meeting - the Women's Air Pistol competition on Saturday.

At the Grand Prix of Pilsen on 17th January, Gorgs scored 383 in the qualification Stage to lead the field of 28 shooters by three points. She kept the lead throughout the final and was only at risk of losing the Gold medal for a few seconds during the firing of the tenth shot. Starting the final in fourth place, Miroslawa Sagun-Lewandowska of Poland had shot well to reach second, and needed her last shot to be 1.4 points better than Gorgs to steal first place. Gorgs shot a 9.5, meaning that Miroslawa could win but needed a perfect 10.9. There was a long wait as she was the last to fire, but her 10.0 left the Gold medal safely to go round Gorg's neck.

The other British finalist of the day was Geraldine Buckley in the Junior Women's Air Pistol. Starting in seventh place and four points behind the Bronze medal position suggested that she had a tough job to make it to the podium. She did not manage to close the gap in terms of points; in fact it increased to 5.2. However some other shooters struggled and Geraldine did move up to fifth place.

Although Geraldine did not win a medal, she did achieve another distinction. She became the first Briton at an overseas international match to shoot an air pistol tie-break for a place in a final under the new ISSF Rule introduced on 1st January 2009. In fact four girls tied on 371, but only two of them could go forward to the final. They therefore had to fire a tie-breaker of five shots which are scored decimally. Geraldine excelled with her 50.6 points, thus earning seventh place going in to the final, the other shooters producing 47.8, 46.7 and 44.7.

The British team won three further medals on the last day of the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney.

Hannah Polak took the first of these, with an excellent win in the Women's 25m Pistol - an event in which she is only able to train a small number of times per year in Switzerland.  A qualification round of 560 gave her a comfortable lead, which she increased during the final.  Vicki Mullin shot the best final on the range, moving up from 6th to 4th.

Rory McAlpine and Matthew Hall then added Gold and Silver in the Men's 50m Prone Rifle, despite encountering problems during the qualification round.  Matthew's rifle malfunctions at the start of the match, and a temporary repair had to be carried out on the firing point in order to allow him to continue.

Rory suffered not one, but two, target failures, and had to re-start his match after the first one and move a second time as a precaution when the rubber in the Sius Ascor unit on both lanes jammed.  The young Scot kept his cool throughout, despite finishing his match 45 minutes after the remainder of the field, and the positions remained unchanged after the final.

Hannah Polak and Vicki Mullin took the first two medals, in the Women's Air Pistol.  Vicki's 369 in the qualification round took her into the final in second place, with Hannah in equal third slot on 366.  A stunning final of 99.5, including one perfect 10.9, pulled Hannah up into second place, with Vicki taking third.

Shortly afterwards, Sheree Cox and Jen McIntosh took Silver and Bronze in the Women's 3P Rifle.  Sheree entered the final in first place with a qualification round of 560, with a four point lead, with Jen ten points further back in third place.  Sheree started well in the final, but two loose shots in the middle lost her the top spot, with Jen safely retaining third place.

The AYOF concludes tomorrow, with GBR interest in the Men's 50m Prone Rifle and the Women's 25m Pistol.

James Huckle won GBR's first Shooting medal at the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival this morning, with Gold in the Men's 10m Air Rifle event.  A qualification round of 588 gave James a remarkable 17 point lead before the final in a field containing athletes from Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore, a solid final of 103.0 extending his lead slightly.  His Gold Medal was presented by Lord Moynihan, Chairman of the British Olympic Association.

In the Women's Air Rifle there was disappointment for both Sheree Cox and Jen McIntosh who took fourth and fifth place respectively.  Sheree had entered the final in equal first place, with Jen in fourth, however after an hour long delay  in the Sydney heat after target failure in the finals hall both were bitterly disappointed with their finals.  Both women shoot again tomorrow, in the 3x20 smallbore match.
